Yeah it's not as simple as dig a hole and plant it. There's many things to consider.

Is there a thread/resources somewhere outlining some good tips for developing 'pre-bonsai' in the ground? I've recently added some young juniper to throw in the ground for 10 years. I'm planning to retire in 13/14 years and want to start getting some material ready now for retirement.

You always seem to be wanting yes/no answers for questions where there is no one simple answer. Even with the best method, soil type, watering, fertility, pests, diseases and climate are all going to be factors in how well the plants grow. Also need to account for different growth rates of different species. That also does not take into account what you think is satisfactory size. Some may be happy with 2 cm, others might be aiming for 10cm thick. So many variables make it impossible to predict the outcome with growing things. 10 years should be plenty of time to grow some great stock. I'd guess that many of them will be good to work with well before 10 years

Stop worrying and get on with it. Any increase in size will be better than none and, as I've said before, we just work with the material we've got, whatever it looks like.

Yeah I don't think I have the patience to wait ten years. I guess I'm wanting to add about 10mm more trunk thickness and some taper.

The best method then, is purchase a flux capacitor for a 1982 DeLorean.
Return back with plant just in time to pot up for the Kokufu-ten.
Always works for me...

Thanks for the link. I had previously glossed over parts of that thread but now reading a little closer there is some great advice there. Thanks again for linking and to all that contributed.
