juniper suggestions

Post by Barber86 »

Hi all, I'm after some advise about my juniper. I would like to bulk up those thin branches in the middle of the tree but am worried that the larger apex is sucking up all the trees energy. Should I cut it back to free up some energy for thickening the thin branches? I'm a newbie to bonsai and would appreciate any suggestions.
Thx, Brad :)

Apex nearly always takes most of the energy and lower branches do no develop well so prune the top more than the lower and weaker branches to give them a chance to catch up.
You can prune any time of year so I would get it done asap to save further weakening of those middle branches.
Looks quite healthy so you are doing a good job looking after it so far :tu2:

I'm sure your tree would grow better if you rotated it 90 degrees to a vertical position ;)

Thanks Shibui, I'll certainly look at pruning the apex back ASAP in order to spread the trees energy to the thin branches and trunk.
It is a little annoying having to replace the gravel that falls out of the sideways pot so I might start growing it vertically ;)
