Hey all,

Phase two of severe bending has officially been completed.

Im sorry for the crappy photos, but theres nothing interesting really to see besides the new bends.



The bends look a little strange right now, but my vision stands firm! As they thicken (which shouldn't take too many years, since half the bent trunk is dead wood).

The shari on the trunk had hardened making bending a little more difficult but ultimately the copper wire held its own.

In future, I envisage at least one more severe bending session. The trunk actually becomes double the thickness after a particular section and will need to be split or shari'd to fix that issue.

For now, I've got the branches pointing in the right direction so I'm happy with that.

Next step though, which I hope to do this spring, is graft Shimpaku foliage on to every branch I want to keep for the design and then wire and bend the crap out of all the ones I want to Jin.

Slowly slowly! But surely surely.

If anyones still following this and expecting something good then thank you for having faith! Here's hoping it survives this round. So far its Juniper 2 - 0 Mo.

Hey Mo,

I like pic 3 the best. It shows the most amount of movement in the live vein at the base, and it's less confusing up the top. The only thing I'm not a fan of is that branch that extends to the far right of the frame.

I'm looking forward to seeing the "finished" product.

In order to test a foliar spray for root re-establishment, I've repotted this one about a week and a half or two weeks ago. It's been doing well, and seems to have adjusted well to the slightly less space.

The pot its in is a fine Japanese pot (should've got a pic of the chop for an ID).



The base is what this tree is so far all about.



The bit that interests me is the bend with great detail shown in earlier photos, but I discovered these dead roots that I decided to poke out of the soil during the repot which, in my opinion, makes that area a whole lot more interesting. As if the tree had been pulled over at some point and the roots exposed.

I'm not 100% on the potting angle at the moment, but I know I wanted to get the most visibility on the base. I think that at next years repot, tilting the tree forward more will achieve better visibility of the interest in the base from the front, but also brings the long Jin forward so its not sweeping off to the back of the tree as it is now. I will have to reduce this Jin for sure, but plan on doing with carving and perhaps letting it rot rather than just peeling it back. I feel the top needs to have some good detail in it too in order to match the base.

It was definitely a little risky to repot this now but I have a little hormone nutrient mix foliar spray I've put together, and I wanted to test it out. It's hard to say whether it has worked or not, but the tree is still alive thats for sure. And with the solstice tomorrow it should start to get a little easier on the roots. What I found interesting though, is that the roots didn't appear to have grown all that well. I expected a lot more fine roots. I will definitely monitor this next year and repot into a mix with some sharp stone type element to promote fine root growth if I don't see better results.

One reason the roots may have not grown is if they were trying to avoid the pot surfaces. If I was them, I would too - given what I found when I took it out of its old pot.



Yuck! Also could not possibly be good for the tree.

Whoa, two years since an update on this one...

Well, it's gone into the ground for now as in the last two years it really hasn't done as much growing as I'd like.

This and the Shimpaku I first purchased are the only two remaining tree's I have kept - life just got in the way and the rest either got sold or died.
