Was a great demo although I couldn't see it through to the end either - went well past 10 and my bed time is 9:30 haha.

Just finished thinning out most of the foliage which will be the future branches.. At which point there will hopefully be lots of back budding to allow the pads to be nice and dense.

I have decided on a new direction for this one, will commence work when the whether is cooler and the tree is dormant. Look forward to a fairly drastic change.

Is it better to attempt heavy bending in warmer or colder months?

Time for an update.

We've had a fairly cold couple of weeks and the next few weeks aren't looking any better. A good time for heavy bending on Junipers.

That base is the reason for this work. It is the most interesting part of the trunk so I want to bring the foliage in closer to it and thus draw attention to it rather than have a good base and a good canopy separated by a long relatively boring trunk.

First job was to split the live vein from the dead wood.

Using this large branch splitter made the job easier and will make the shari much more natural than if a cutting tool was used - the down side is you can often split into live wood if you're not careful.

Looking pretty good here. Juniper has red heartwood when it is first exposed, which reassures me that I haven't done significant damage.

Raffia was not required as the live vein was actually quite thin and easy to bend.

1st set of bends complete and theres no going back on this now very long term plan. You might notice also that the remaining dead wood was reduced quite a lot - probably not enough yet but lets see how it goes.

Wire was left on the branches during this process for a couple of reasons. It allowed me to move branches out of the way while working and also meant that I could turn the foliage the right way up after bending - reducing stress to the tree.

It will now be allowed to grow out for a few years to set the bends and allow the tree to recover. Heavy ferts will be applied and the tree will not be repotted for several years to allow it to gain strength and vigor.

Once I am happy with the health of the tree, I will place the next set of bends into the trunk.

I have already marked in my mind the branches that need to be removed in the future, and what's left will be grafted with Shimpaku foliage.

I'm not a great fan of the procumbens foliage at all! Too prickly and doesn't smell as nice as Shimpaku.

The final step in the development will be a smaller more suitable pot. But that seems like a job for my future grand children at this stage

I like it a lot. I think you've greatly improved the future of this tree, and as you say, the focus can now be more on the interesting deadwood than the long thin trunk. Well done, and congrats as much on the guts and vision to do it as the result!

Hi Mo,
Just been following your posts, bloody miserable day in tamworth about 7deg outside, mate great work and vision. The only thing that I would suggest is that you repot regularly, this is where the health and vigour comes from. Prolonged pot bound will only make the plant weak and make the time spent longer. Other than that wonderful going to be a beauty

Thanks mate, the weathers just been so wet and isn't going to change any time soon.

The reason I wont be repotting this tree for several years is it hasn't spent a long time in the pot its in at the moment, and has now been worked twice with rather dramatic changes. This means that the roots won't be growing well and it will actually take a few years for it to become pot bound enough for it to become detrimental to it's health.

We shall see though! If the roots start to look like they're really filling the pot then a repot will be in order.

Cheers mate, took a while to come to this decision and see where the tree could go down the track. But once I saw it that was it and it had to be done.
