The styling is very good but I can't go past Gerard's vision. The overall movement to the right with a slightly cascading branch and compact apex is very appealing

My feelings (and that's all thy are) is that removing the TH lower branch makes it look very 'leggy' although the shape is almost more appealing...
Gerard's Virt. Would shorten the tree, and again, I feel that helps with the 'legginess' but it doesn't appeal to me as much as the first Virt.

So now that you have contradictory views, have fun!

Appreciate the input mate, but I am wanting to clarify what you mean. You say removing the "TH lower branch" what did you mean by this? Also you mentioned the first virt which is more appealing to you - which one are you meaning? sorry im confused

I understand it is leggy, as it is still in its infancy in terms of development and needs a lot of growing to ramify and grow some "pads"

It has been a while since I have updated this so here goes.

I bought a drum pot which I am thinking won't be its final pot but potted into this in 2015 (I think)

Then April this year I wired it. I noticed today that the wire was starting to bite in so removed it today. The first 2 photos are in April this year one before wiring and the second after wiring but before setting apex. Last photo was before removing wire today. The bark is finally beginning to how on the trunk so a few more years growing and ramifying and I think it will be a great tree.

It looks like a great shaped tree. I'm a little concerned about the cluster of branches about halfway up though. I suspect leaving all those on will thicken the trunk at that point and you'll end up with reverse taper. I would actually consider removing the thickest one. Not only is it adding more to the possible problem but it also hides part of the trunk which I think should be seen as in the earlier virt.

Thanks Neil, I have had this tree at a couple of workshops with both International and local artists and asked the same thing about too many branches from one spot. I was told not to worry about it, but thinking back that may have just been in the early stages of development.

Whilst I would like to reduce the number of branches from this spot, I am scratching my head as to which one(s) to remove . I really like the first left hand branch and feel this adds character to the tree however this is thicker than the first right hand branch.

I am open to suggestions.

Hi Luke ,well done with the Radiata ,coming along nicely. I would not be to concerned about the thickness of the second compared to the the first. Maybe pad out the left a bit and turn it into a feature .In the long run it is about character and your vision. Just my worth. Good luck with whatever you decide .Cheers John

So today I went along to a pine Autumn/Winter intensive course at Bonsai Mujo. This is aimed at 2 and 3 needle trees. We learnt a lot of theory and were asked to bring a tree along for needle plucking and bud selection. I had already done this last month so took the opportunity to re-wire this Radiata.


I had to take the spare wheel out of my car to fit this tree in - it seems it has gained some height as I've never had an issue fitting it in the car before. Home after workshop -

Update on this Radiata -

I repotted it in to a new pot in 2018

Just last weekend took it along to a club workshop with SA Bonsai Society with Andrew Sellman.

I couldn't be happier with the outcome. As you can see we removed the first right hand branch as suggested by Mauro back in 2015 among others. (There is a virt posted here if you scroll back a page or 2.

I need to adjust the angle to the right just a fraction so the trunk isn't coming out dead straight upright. I also need some back budding in sections and to grow a couple of the back branches out. The first pad on the right is created by 2 branches and eventually one of these will go too.

The workshop was good value, your pine continues to develop and improve. Well done on the patience front.

As Watto says, a patient progression. This is a fine tree. I find it intriguing that this tree had so many options (and still does) .... the choice to remove the low branch on the outside of the curve was a bold move and as is often the case - less is more.

I look forward to future updates.
