A couple of new Black Pines.

Hi All,

I recently acquired a couple of pines that I have styled and thought I would share them here. While they both have along way to go, I think there is potential in both to be reasonable trees, give or take 5 to 10 years.

The first one is just your standard Black Pine, not unhappy with the result but there are many tweaks that will be done over the coming years for it is but young.

This next one is a Nishiki Black Pine that I played around with today, there are a couple of front''s I could go with but that depends on the growth over the next couple of years.

They both have a long way to go but I am not too unhappy with the outcome from their first styling. I will update this thread every few months to create a progression. All comments are always welcomed and in fact encouraged, be it sugar coated or brutal opinions, to me it is all positive to me.

Hi David , mate these are going to be very nice given time . I certainly like the movement on the JBP , I purchased 1 a couple of years ago from Shibui with very similar clip and grow movement . They certainly progress quick from here on .

Give them a few more years and they will be there or there abouts i think, the larger JBP needs 15 more years IMHO

Do you find with multiple fert baskets after de-candling that you get long internodes and long needles?

Hi all,

Lane, to answer your question, No the node length didn't increase with the heavy fert, buds did which is what I was after.

I got around to giving my Nishiki some attention the last two days. I thinned it out (could do with more) changed the angle to come more towards the viewer and positioned a couple of the branches. I can already see in time that I will bring the right hand side down more and compact it, which will keep with the flow of the tree. It also got a better pot (an old Japanese pot a friend gave me) that is a much better size.

I think it is better than before and enroute to being a far better tree being so static as it was before.

Oh dear.... I see a very big problem. Your recent work has left you with a sensational tree. Now what will you do with the time you would otherwise have spent working on it??

Thanks Ryceman haha you picked up on the error of my words +1 :p I meant to say that it 'Isn't' as static as it was before. Well played, I rate that mate and thank you for the kind words. In a few years once it has filled out and the right side is brought down more, it should hopefully be show worthy.

I got around to playing with the larger standard JBP the last few days. It will be fun to see how it responds.

I might be pushing it but lessons will be learned. I intend on cutting up some sphagnum moss tomorrow and soaking it well before covering the surface of each of these pines to help with their recovery. Once it has recovered I will thin each out more, but I have left excess needles and buds to assist in the recovery.

The look of this tree (the nishiki) from the side is really nice Willow! I realise it's 2D but very nice just the same. Perhaps some ideas for the future?
