I think MM was referring to the amount of foliage in the apex of the trees is denser and visually more weighty than the lower pads. ( more space in in the upper foliage maybe?)
I do not mind it the was it is. The powerful trunk needed to supporting the large rampant foliage mass up high, and age thinning out the tips of the branches. I can see merit in thinning but is not required :imo:

Nice tree Kez,

Ken

Looking good. Some shari would be daringly fantastic.
Always we hope someone else has the answer.

a minor point on a very nice tree--
it would be interesting to see what the roots are doing under the surface -possible approach root graft to flare the base on the left?

I had been thinking that the pot this tree is in was too masculine after it's restyle/refinement so today I repotted it into a more appropriate pot

Here's the root ball after a year in it's mix (60% bonsai south pre mixed soil/40% diatomite)

And here it is in it's new pot

Great thread Kerrin.
Good little journey this one has gone on.
I like the new pot and think it an improvement on the last.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Hi Kerrin, I really like the improvements that you have made to this tree over the last couple of years and the new pot is certainly a better fit design wise. The only thing that I would like to see in this tree is a few secondary foliage pads established closer in to the trunk, not so dense that you couldn't see the branch structure, just a little top up and not as monotonous as I have just quickly sketched, but you get the idea :D

well i gotta admit bonsai motivation has been pretty low for me lately, with moving house late last year and not having a proper display area I have put most of my trees into maintenance mode,

That being said I finally got around to doing another number on this tree, I had unwired it maybe 12 months ago and let it do its thing, which I must admit wasnt much, and over the last 2 weeks or so (like I said low motivation haha) I have been refining this tree bit by bit

Finished it this afternoon, lets see what everyone thinks of its slight change of direction
