Juniper cascade rock planting progression.

Post by Josh »

I decided to begin a progression on this Juniper I have just started working on. I have had the rock for a while, it was much taller but to heavy so I cut it down to a more manageable size (still heavy enough). I picked up a juniper from Bonsaisensation recently that I thought would fit the rock. Decided it was about time to do something with it. I had to reduce the rootball a fair bit so hoping it survives. I'll let it recover now and see if it survives then work on wiring the branches. I plan to grow the tail down lower.

If it survives this transplant I'll keep updating it's progression here.

Looks interesting! I think 'side view' should be the 'front' ;)

Still looks very heavy to me :o should be nice though :tu:

Josh, I have the impression you like your rock plantings. You will not need to visit the gym.
I like where you are going with this one
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Your right Ryan, I do have to thin it out a bit more. I think the front will be about half way between the current front and the side view.

Yeah I could've put it in a normal cascade pot but everyone's got one of those  I've actually only got about 5-6 in rocks, the other hundred odd are in bonsai pots or plastic grow pots so not that many rocks really (that's have I justify it anyway :palm: ) Funny you mention the gym, I just cancelled the membership last week.

Thanks Peter, I will play with which is the front a bit more once I thin it out and wire the branches. It needs more thinning out for sure.

As I mentioned this is the beginning of the progression so hopefully it will develop into something worthwhile.

Like the sumo size setup particularly the colour contrast between the chocolate rock and foliage. Just remember to keep an eye on the temperature of rock during the coming heat.

I like it man, once you've formed the cloud/pads it'll have nice contrast in colour and shape against the rock.

I tried my hand at one too this season using a procumbens nana nursery tree and some lava rock Ive had since I pulled down my planted tank:
