Re: Needle Junipers "Another challenge"
Hi Brekel , mate you can turn a boring trunk into something unique , just need a little imagination .
They are making progress , size and weight is a factor with most people who choose to play with bonsai but I see things a little differently .
They are too big for this old bloke now but if they never make bonsai in my care or anybody elses , they will make interesting compact garden tree's .
Cheers . Alpine

To much spare time but it take the focus off life's issues
Cheers Ian
A bit of grunting and groaning to put some movement into the smaller branches and yes 1 broken branch .A bit of wiring and shaping Minor adjustment There is a lower branch at the rear of the tree which will be used as an embedded graft to give a bit more depth to the lower base hence the needle foliage on the tip of the branch , not possible today but it will happen . Carving will take place when I can hold the die grinder safely Cheers Ian

Re: Needle Junipers "Another challenge"
Hi Tim . mate I do enjoy it , but i did retire for a reason not through choice . I still have a few hundred tree's here all were bare rooted , root pruned , re-potted and trimmed up a couple of months ago with some help .
With all the climate changes , rain and warm weather everything sprouted earlier than normal .Their all healthy and growing , cant say the same for myself but that's life .
I have noticed a drought on topics and feedback here since returning but if I can inspire someone to post or create then that makes for participation.
No Pain , no Gain , doesn't hurt me to type in a topic , creating one does . "Click a Tick" doesn't work for me
Thanks for the feedback Tim .
Cheers Ian

Re: Needle Junipers "Another challenge"
Couldn't help myself , I looked at it last night and as if I was superman . This was pre-carved with a chainsaw a few years ago by the look of it
Superman turned up and this is the result While this is only a basic sculpture I will get Karen to apply a coat of lime sulphur to it .She loves painting and that should alleviate the dressing down I'm expecting when she arrives home . This is the first decent carving I have done with the tungsten bits purchased from Bonsai Sensation , "Magic Cutters" and only 1 mishap I struck a live vein , but it should heal without any issues .
Cheers Ian

Better a live vein on the tree than on yourself, that would have been an issue.

Re: Needle Junipers "Another challenge"
Mate with all the lack of participation here from the 15000 + members I might as well slash my wrists .
I think the next generation here is obviously struggling with communication ,
Texting to away from a good chat , click and tick has taken away from communication on this site .
For those that do put in the effort , the site is better for it , I'll keep trying as long as i can .
Keep on keeping on .
Cheers Ian

Have noticed the same thing on here for a while, posts of established material tend to get minimal interaction. Absolutely no idea why.
Junipers not really my jam, but really appreciate seeing the work and process you go through on these trees

Re: Needle Junipers "Another challenge"
Hi Bunce , dont do facebook or twitter and yes Ausbonsai is better just need more effort from members to keep it ticking over .
Hi TimS , I find it more and more difficult to play with tree's now but a member asked if i would return to help motivate and inspire 'If thats Possible".I can't update a lot of topics as the material has been sold , however i do ask the new owners to join here and post a topic but I dont think i have actually seen a topic of the items sold .
Ieaning on a shovel while other do the work is not my idea of progress but like I said I'll stick around as long as i can .
Cheers Ian

Re: Needle Junipers "Another challenge"
I don’t know if the age of forums is just generally over now or what’s going on. I wonder if moderators would be able to look at the data to see how many members have actually been active on here in the last 12 months. My guess would be very small amount
I’ve sold a few trees off myself over the last 12 months, some I reckon will re-appear on here, others went to members I didn’t recognise the names of
I still check in frequently as members like yourself, Shibui and Treeman to mention a few have been great at increasing my understanding and skills, but nobly growing deciduous means very long times between updates for me

Re: Needle Junipers "Another challenge"
Thanks Ian, you folk add so much to this forum and it odd absolutely appreciated.
I have thoughts on the topic of participation and will put them on paper when I get a chance.
However, back to the topic of the juniper. Ian mentioned about hitting the live vein in one of his trees. I wonder if someone could point it out maybe, as I’m still learning about it and am very interested (ignorant) in the topic.
