First ever Juniper

Post by SueBee »

I found this Savin's Juniper (Juniperus Tamarix 'Sabina" at my local nursery ($9.95). It seemed like a good one to learn on - am I right?. I can see a cascade in this one and have never tried a cascade. So here's hoping. Any hints, tips and expert advice welcome.

Sabina juniper is used for bonsai quite a bit. I find the growth habit a bit coarse to get good neat foliage pads but it does grow faster than J. chinensis.

Not sure what sort of suggestions you want for the tree. It is currently a small, thin plant and you can make it any shape you desire. junipers do cascade quite well so if that's what you want go for it.
If you start to prune and shape at this stage you will probably have a skinny juniper bonsai for many years.

Agreed.. let it grow for at least a year or 2 then you could wire the trunk in the direction you want

OK will plant it in a grow bin for a couple of years to thicken up. Thanks for the advice.
