Shimpaku juniper growth rate

Hi all, I'm fairly new to bonsai
Several months ago, I potted a shimpaku juniper into a styrofoam grow box
It's currently growing well in a mix of scoria and sieved pine bark.
The trunk is currently 2cm thick at the base and I am wondering how long would it
Take for the plant to get a trunk thickness of 4-5cm

Depends on what you are prepared to do. If you just let it grow without doing anything but feed it, it may take between 5-7 years. You’ll get the lower branches blocked out from the sun this way and they’ll eventually die off.

It you keep thinning out the upper layers to keep the lower branches alive it will take longer because you’d be cutting off “energy”.
