Great work Gerard. These give rise to inspiration for my Ryceman3 seedlings - I’ll muck around with crap stock but having seedlings from the start - it’s trees like these that provide the 20 year vision for those seedlings.
Bonsai teaches me patience.

Thanks Keels, I see you are from Canberra? If this is correct you have probably seen this tree at the arboretum in 2016 / 2017. Very nice Gerard, particularly the clump Mugo and the Radiata. I also like the way your photo of the Radiata has brought out the bark and the colours of the foliage. I'd like to hear your techniques in looking after Radiata (maybe in another thread).

Very nice indeed. I like the Radiata also, great bark! ... I don't have one but I have seen several nice examples on this forum and in exhibitions that have me interested ...

I do not consider myself an expert on radiata but methods are simple, late sprinng I cut the new candles to about 2 cm (balancing energy). In autumn it starts to look very 'fluffy' so I remove the old needles and reduce all growth to 2 buds.Matt S wrote:Very nice Gerard, particularly the clump Mugo and the Radiata. Mugo technique is much the same. With both species I worry about weakening the tree by removing all of the old needles, I believe a rest every few years to gain strength is worth considering.

I’m jumping into them! I have these two variants and this advice I can understand.
I also love a link that was recently highlighted by ScottR (I think) to Phutu/Eric Schrader on pines.

Hey, do you mind sharing any advice on how you made your clump style mugo? I'm thinking of doing a JBP clump style - following the advice of the Eisei-en video (though that video was about clumping maples).
I was thinking to cut off any branches on the inside of the clump, have the tallest tree in the middle, and then angle the others outward.
Was thinking to do 5, 7 or 9 JBP clumped together, using a zip tie or thick wire.
