Twisted Juniper Procumbens
Hi all
Last year we had a few posts and discussions about Creating interesting trees in a short time by twisting and contorting them wildly and then shaping them
The technique was raised by jow in these threads here,
viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1281
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1307&hilit=+jow#p12385
and based on his study in Japan
We I took it up as I had several +Junis in stock and picked up some more starters from Ray. Twisted them in knots and left them on the bench.
This one is a Juniper Procumbens I had grown from cutting and did not know what to do with it so thought it was a good candidate :
and this was done last year june 09
Any thoughts and ideas gladly accepted

Re: Twisted Juniper Procumbens
Last week I realised the wire was all cutting in so took them to school and removed the wire and trimmed them all back to see what I can make of him
I think it will not be much taller than is now ( about 4 inches or so, and the foliage will be kept quite sparse
The first branches i will get some more movement in I think, but apart from that not much more to do. Just thicken the trunk more and trim the foliage

Re: Twisted Juniper Procumbens
I was looking at a couple of mine todat KC and thinking it was about time we re- visited where members where at with these. I have a couple of Juni's that I did this with this. I doubt that the wire is cutting in yet(bit hard to see) but I wouldn't be concerned if it was, just turn it into shari . Will need lots of growth to turn into anything.
I think yours still needs more growth as well.
It is hard to get movement at the very base of a tree but it is very important otherwise it looks obvious that it has been trained. I think this is a fault wit this tree. I would put some new wire on the trunk (stick it down in the soil and wrap it right from down low. Then get a bend in that trunk down low and then let it grow out again.
I will ad some pics on my JPP and juniper if you like

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Ahh forgot about that oneanttal63 wrote:This split man im not seeing things.
It has nearly healed completely. The same bend is in the second photo in the second post and (#108) and you can see it almost grown over completely
This is where the original trunk was cut off, and the bit left on the bend was an original branch

Cool it will be nice for everyone to add there own versions to see what are all doingBretts wrote:I was looking at a couple of mine todat KC and thinking it was about time we re- visited where members where at with these. The Lack of movement in the trunk I wa hoping to disguise by planting at an angle later as I found it real hard to get it any lower when I originally did it. Maabey I can add Shari to provide interest there as well?
I have some Shimpaku at the same stage so will update them next week too

Re: Twisted Juniper Procumbens
cool ken i see. dont worry too much about lack of anything, planting angles or more wire in the next hit will be fine. Besides you dont want every single one looking cloned. mine are a rippa, i will start my own thread in due course! Well done to you mate!

Re: Twisted Juniper Procumbens
All doing good at the moment:-)
This particular one I have put in the ground this year to put some bulk on
I have 5 or all planted together into a Poly box and 2 have really taken off, but the others are slooowwww to get going.
Will see if I can get some update photos of them all when it dries out here
the ones in the Box I will put in the ground next year I think.
