It will swell in the sense that only the areas that have bark will grow and therefore the energy of the trees growth will be channeled to the outer regions of the trunk. because there is no matching shari on the other side the 'swelling' will be minimal i think.
There is a good article in the current Bonsai focus on this type of shari creation. Well worth the money just for that article alone.
When i connect the jin to the shari i will do it by slowly extending the existing shari's width, so there will not be any bark between these areas to worry about.
The problem with shari on pines is that the wood is soft and rots easily so i am guessing that the long term future of this tree may include a hollow where the shari runs.
Hope that answers your questions.

Hi Jow.
Nice work but I liked your virt better. This is a very nice tree. I think the movement of the trunk should be embraced as a feature not camouflaged. I think the shari extending into the canopy achieves this well. I think the jin upsets the image.

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Re: Japanese Black Pine re-wire.
The shari will eventually end up more like the virtual. I have just mad a small start to let the tree adjust to the deadwood and once it has had another seasons growth, i will extend it and widen it. I will repeat this over the next few years to eventually end up fairly close to the virtual.Bretts wrote:Hi Jow.

I don't mind the jin, but the beauty of it is that if i do decide it doesn't fit the picture, i can always cut it off down the track.
