Just thought I would share a few pics of the dig today. I came home with 3 trees, one of which I am glad I found first as I think it has heaps of potential. Anyway, I shall let the pics do the talking......

Not sure what you mean by that Craig, I had to re-size the pics down to less than 1MB to upload them , so that may have affected it. But if you click on the pic in shows a larger photo which I would say is plenty big enough to see the trees in all their glory. Please feel free to suggest another way if you know of a better way?

Your quite right the pics are fine Luke, i was having a monitor issue, it's sorted now, my appologies..,,The collection site looks amazing mate, i can hardly believe you only took 3 trees , my car would have been Chockas ,, Have fun

That's right, I was quite suprised, I only had to use my shovel, no need for the hand mattock or full-size mattock I purchased especially for the dig. Oh well now I have the right tools for the Olive dig next month I had a great day, they all recover

That's quite alright, no need to worship I would have taken more trees, but I didn't want to be greedy, and it was a 1 & a 1/2 hour drive home, so I thought it best to take as much of the root-ball possible to give every chance of recovery Also I gave them a drink of seasol before I left so I didn't want seasol every where on my back-seat (hence the tarps and tubs).
Now if only I had a van or trailer

Not sure if I will be going back there this year, as it is 1 & 1/2 hour drive each way. I will most likely be going to Kuipto forest at some stage though which is very similar. Let me know what your after and I might be able to sort something out for you.

I have just spoken to the ranger at Kuipto, and he has informed me that the Canariensis (canaray island pine) do not self seed or "re-gen" as they call it. He thinks they are sterile He did however inform me that they have Japanese red pine, Radiata, Pinasters and a few other varieties also. I will be arranging a time to go and dig over the next couple of months. I can't wait!!

Hi Luke308, the ranger may be mistaken on the Japanese Red Pines , if they were used as plantation timber they would most likely be European Red Pines Pinus Resinosa .They are very similar in the bark , the Resinosa's were trialled here . They are a 2 needle pine used for furniture manufacturing . Very brittle timber, difficult to wire as they snap thin branches whereas other pines bend .Easy to collect as they dont have a tap root as other pines do , shallow radial roots , grow best in river sand or sandy soil , however i have numerous trainers in pure red scoria .They can and will die off for a season or two then reshoot , fooling the best of us . I did have pics of the tree's up here , however they were lost and the plantation now destroyed . Look forward to seeing some pics .

Hi Luke308 , well mate their still green so it should all be good for survival ,Usually the turn brown in 6-8 weeks so i wold give these the thumbs up .
