Juniper squamata

Post by John Henry »

Hi all,
This is a Juniper squamata approx 25 years old, for the past four years i have been feeding heavily and pinching back hard on a regular basis, the pads are now starting to shape up well.(one of my least favourite trees to work on)
Constructive comments welcome.
Thanks, John

Hi John,
I like the tree and like the pot, however, That bottom left branch looks a bit cramped. Maybe a different pot would suit better.
Mate the branch in front of the trunk at the bottom worries me and as the main part of the tree is sort of behind the trunk and deadwood at the top, it seems to accentuate the distance between the front and back of the tree.
Just a minor "tweek" to the top rear branch in an upward position might fill that space under the apex/ top right branch.
Will develop into a nice tree. Good work
cheers
Dave

i definitely agree with dave on this one john, something has to be done about that first left branch...

it's blocking your nice trunkline and shari :!:

maybe take it toward the back and into the trunk a bit...

and i think even bring the canopy down maybe, what do you think john :?: are you happy with it or would you tweak it some :?:

Hi John,

Nice one. I agree with all of the above. I love the pot but not with this juniper.

With some tricky wiring and bending you could compress the top, shorten and compact the branch on the left and possibly lightly compact and raise the branches on the right.

The existing jins and shari would then stand out more against the more solid background.

Probably try to keep it a little wild looking to match the jin.

This will be a very nice bonsai in your capable hands.

Grant

Hi All,
Thanks for your words of wisdom, you certainly help me fill in the day.....i have removed part of the lower back branch and bent it back....the front lower branch has been raised and the apex lowerd.
Thanks again for your advice.
Regards, John

Hi Mate,
looks magic.
The next stage of the evolutionary process might be losing the bottom RHS branch pad, again because to my eye having the lowest branch on the side of the trees slant tends to make it look like its falling out the pot.
You have a nice tree there
cheers
Dave

Hi John
PERRRRRRRRRFECT !!!!
cheers
Dave
PS Might just have to shorten slightly the 2nd RHS branch as it's a bit longer than the one below it

Hi Ketutg,
I have been designing these pots and having them made by a potter friend of mine to suite the tree .
Thanks, John

Hi Ketutg.
I make pots similar to that one too and in several sizes. Nice tree John and nice pot too.
