Prunus Persica Versicolour

I was under the impression these were Prunus Mume , unfortunately after actually viewing the tree they turned out to be Flowering Peach instead

. The floral display was as good as it gets so i took the time to dig 30 odd seedlings just because I had permission to do so and the lawnmower was coming along to destroy them .

Worse case scenario they would be large 2 man tree's or garden feature tree's . Either way they HAVE AN exceptional colour combination ranging from dark red , pink , white and pink blush , white and white with red or pink mottling all on the one tree . I haven't seen the tree in leaf but research tells me the leaves could be as long as 140mm , in there lays the challenge .

I'd love to get a peach as they are vibrant and seem to stay on alot longer than the mumes??

Hi Inspired , this tree has been in flower for over 6 weeks and is still full of buds , late Winter to mid Spring hopefully . Just showing the first pair of tip leaves now .

Hi matlea , the colours are absolutely brilliant , I could see the tree from the moment I turned into the street .

Hi Watto , leaf size might be an issue however the older 2-3 year old seedlings have 25-30mm leaves while the new seasons seedlings have 30-70 mm leaves . I think if mother nature can do it i can try bloody hard just for the colours . With 30 to play with i can also try numerous methods with 6 tree's each to reduce leaf size , failing that i will have hacked and chopped a heap of peaches and learned something along the way .

Cheers Fella's . Alpine

Hi Inspired , mate I'm bordering on insanity and in need of a horse tranquilizer to slow me down . I have taken 2 big falls lately over the retaining walls and down the stairs and its not slowing me down like it should , granite is mighty hard .

I think My Wife is about to break my other leg , I showed her these pics :D , then confessed I had collected 30 odd seedlings :P , I had to go out for a few hours to let her cool off  .

Cheers . Alpine

Ouch you take it easy there Alpine..

Mate 30 seedlings plus all others on the go.. I guess its no longer an addiction but a sickness for trees. One that many of us will never be cured and what for?

Just gotta love'it!

Hi Alpine, You do realize that seedlings from a cultivar will have genetic variation and will not be the same as the parent tree? There will be some good, some ordinary and you won't know until they flower. Just my :2c: ;)

Hi Hackimoto, I certainly do realize the issue , I actually went up to inspect the tree with the plan to take cuttings early-mid summer with an option to inarch graft off the tree . I may have a few years to wait but it should be worth that wait if i get 3-4 different variations . I have a necterine/peach here grown from seed last year which flowered this year , the wait might not be that long at all .

Back in full leaf with a couple of variations in the shoots there might just be a few good multi floral displays in the future

There is a couple here that will be used for grafting Prunus mume onto very soon .

Thanks for the update. Did you get any flowers on the seedlings?

Hi Watto , mate no flowers as they were cut back very hard to naked trunks to produce more back budding for better ramification , could be a couple of more years before they are allowed to flower . Plenty of shoots up and down the trunks so I will work these fairly hard to develop ramification and the basic shapes this season .

They were allowed to grow to around a metre high last year before being cut back on two occasions , then cut back to 200-300mm high and root pruned in Winter . The pot grown specimen slowed down to a trickle so after development this year they will go into planter bags or pots .

Well this is the start of something beautiful

. I stumbled on these this morning after an early rise and decided to dig over a new grow bed and transplant them . Only one of the plants has flowers but they were cut back hard again for Bonsai development .

I will post a pic when they open .
