Don't bother looking, you just will not get it in Australia!

In Vietnamese it is known as Mai Vàng, it blooms profusely during Tết Festival or Lunar New Year. For southern Vietnamese, it is almost sacrilegious...

A few years ago, Mr. Hanh Nguyễn did import about 20 into Victoria -- none make it through alive!

There is a similar plant in Australia -- Ochna serrulata, which in QLD, and NSW are weeds.

Ochna serrulata's leaves are much smaller, I would say about 1/6 of the Ochna Integerrima, the flowers are smaller too; and are facing downward instead of upward like Ochna Integerrima.

Thanks for the heads up and info. I thought I saw a matured specimen at one of the Tet festivals which was simply amazing.

Then again could it have been the other specie and cheers for clarifying the two

So the ochna serrulata is a weed? I wonder if these plants mature well, are long living and take well to bonsai techniques?

Shame about your plant really.. how long did you have it? It looks good and other than the differences to the "OI" you mentioned, are they flowers pretty much the same?

Hi, weed in the sense that they can grow out of control.

The QLD government websites have plenty of info about this plant. You can Google them.

In QLD, the largest I have seen is about 6-7 cm in trunk site. Up to about 2 m in height.

In spite of keeping them for several years, I still have not had any clear observation about their growing pattern down in VIC. Branches tend to die back, they seem to like plenty of water?

Their mature seeds and that of integerrima are virtually indistinguishable.

G'day Inspired! I've had one for just over 5 years and to say their slow going when it comes to putting on girth is an understatement!
As a struck cutting (speaker wire thickness) it was promptly put in the ground for 3 years. In that time it grew to the whopping thickness of a pencil
Seeing this, I decided to whack it in a pot and there it's been for the last 2 years. In that time (in the pot) it has not put on any thickness what so ever. To me it's a novelty. A shame really, as the flowers are quite pretty, though, only last a few days. The seed pods that form after are spectacular IMO.
I did visit a Vietnamese mans garden once and he had a absolute beauty (yamadori) that had a trunk that was at least 6-8 inches across . Must have been at least 50+ years old when collected.
After 5 years of having this, it's safe to say I can't really work out their traits or growth habits. Branch dieback is a big problem.

Gee they do take their time by the sounds of things.

Certainly want one in my collection. When do they flower?

Started flowering (in Perth) about 2 months ago. Seed pods stay on for a good month or two. Mate you must be psychic....Antman is my nickname!

mine are in a hothouse that I shall heat thru our Winter here in Sydney

if you're not doing as much in Victoria I fear you will be wasting your time and money
