Rose Bonsai

Hey everyone!

I have read that roses do not make good bonsai...................... but look at this trunk!
it has been run over by lawn mowers for a long time! great character on the trunk that will look better once I get in there and clean it up.
there was very little root after collection so my hopes are not to high for its survival but

I wouldn't waste my time with a rose if you are intending to grow it as bonsai. As a feature plant : yes. As a bonsai : no

Roses won't make a formal "pine-tree" type bonsai, but they can be interesting in their own right. It's certainly a great trunk. You probably won't get a trunk-and-branches structure from it, more like a number of different trunk-shoots that you renew every few years. It is most probably root-stock by now - maybe purplish simple flowers once a year. Murata's book "Four seasons of Bonsai" has a couple of good examples. Wild-natural style, rather than formal. I have one i am playing with but it is a dwarf flower, very tight little yellow/cream clusters. A cascade suits the style but if this has large flowers it will look a little silly. A novelty and is fun to play with. you will have to clip and grow.

I have collected a few today and will be interested in
a/ if they recover with not many roots
b/ what i can make of them in time.

one will go in the ground and the the others??? who knows. I have a bonsai Jacaranda that many people like, a fairly awesome Kurume Azalea that people reckon are no good for Bonsai, and several Hibiscus too so ya never know

Hey Guys sorry for not updating on this sooner!


Unfortunately i got a really warm day with hot winds last summer and the top wilted, it threw a new shoot from the base and the top eventually died off. I used the shoot from the bottom and created a Tanuki and the trunk rotted away.
