Bougainvillea

Post by matlea »

Just an update on this bought. First pic is from mid 2012. Second pic is after recent repot a couple of weeks ago. Change of pot and defoliation.

This one has pink flowers but doesn't seem to flower as readily as some others I have which seem to flower at will! Lost?!!!

Nice mate, unusual with that root, hard to know if you should have ever taken it off with just the two photos, but now that it has aged along with the trunk I could live with it.

I find the pink seems to flower at a different time to most other colours but when it gets going it is a great sight - usually covered in bracts.

Thanks watty, yes the root is a bit unusual. It started out about a quarter of the thickness and has slowly thickened over time. Bit of an experiment... Makes it unique

Bougy this one only has ever had a few flowers at a time unlike some of the red varieties which are covered. All are treated the same. Maybe it will produce more in time?

Do you feed it heavily with chook poo ? Obviously you can't keep trimming it - they only flower on new wood so you need to let it go a little.

I've letting it grow out and have fed with different fertilisers over time for flowering plants, still not producing many flowers... Might be a dud! I'll still keep it though!

Not flowering means it is not a dud. Could be not getting enough sunlight as bougy loves sunlight not filter sunlight, heavily pruning makes bougy goes into recovery mode upto 8months or more, too much watering prefer soil to be on the dry side and feed with potash monthly. I feed my bougy with 6:8:10 ratio.

Worth the wait too. Lovely ... and I’m envious. My step-dad and I try to grow bougy’s ... and have a habit of killing them! Some we kill slowly, some we kill quickly .... but we kill ‘em!

The dark pots look great, makes the coloured bracts pop and the foliage is as healthy as don't get much better than that.

Thanks... I tried the tea bags filled with fertiliser (can see them in the pic), I think this was the trick... more consistent feeding than my usual hit and miss technique.

Update on this one. Last week I cut off any old leaves hanging on from last season and have given it a cut back to a bud ready for this seasons new growth. Buds are starting to move now so won't be long until it is in leaf. Might try and get a pic when the new leaves are just out.Image
