Flowering Trees - False Economy

Post by Daluke »

Is it just me or do flowering trees seem more popular this season?

I don't mind them, but I'm seeing lots of prunus, quince etc. being offered for sale.

Is it a bubble economy?

I think flowering trees have been popular for a while now. We get lots of requests but don't grow many so cannot usually meet the demand.
Maybe the growers have finally caught up and can offer stock this year.

Bonsai fashion does seem to come and go.
One year I took gingkos to BSV show/sale but hardly sold any. Next year did not take any but overwhelmed with requests :shake: Similar experiences with other species at different times.

I think you can blame treeman for the interest in flowering bonsai this year. The photos of his quinces have stirred up lots of interest.

Flowers and/or fruit just adds interest from a growing perspective.
I personally love flowering and fruiting trees.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

I've been in the plant selling game for quite a while and I can tell you that if you have something in flower - and it doesn't matter what it is - it will be the first thing to sell. Everybody understands flowers. Pines and junipers are an acquired taste. Having said that I wouldn't trade my quinces for a pine any time soon! But of course you gotta have both.....
