Definitely looks like Cotoneaster to me.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Being a Cotoneaster microphyllus would that mean it will get the red fruit? or just the white flower? Does anyone know species relation?

Well done Grant. C. microphyllus it is.
The growth habit is stiff and straight but with some wiring and regular pruning you can get a good bonsai from this species.
White flowers are followed by dark red fruit. Mine usually set more fruit than C. horizontalis

I must admit i thought this was a poor gift choice . . . but with many a crap thing, beauty can be accomplished with growth, help & direction.
