Autumn flowering Wisteria?

Post by melbrackstone »

I have a very confused wisteria, it's produced a flower bud! Only had it for a bit over a year, and this is the first time it's had a flower bud....but it's mid summer!!!!!! Anyone have a wisteria that flowers in Autumn?

Yep I have a Chinese Wisteria that produces the occasional out of season flower. Nothing like the early season flush which is copious . It’s under development so I only hack it back a couple of times a year so not sure if that makes a difference compared to a bonsai Wisteria that is regularly pruned for control/shape.

Thanks Steve, it's good to know they occasionally throw a flower out of season, I was concerned it was going loopy and could be thinking of turning up its toes! It's still in the large nursery pot I bought it in, and I haven't done anything but chop a bit of top growth off it, so I'm pleased to know it's clearly of an age to flower!

In fact, wisteria often flower for a second time.
Years ago I got excited by one flowering in late summer nearby and took cuttings. Turned out to just be an ordinary garden wisteria :palm: Since then I have seen summer flowers most years in different gardens.

One in our garden had quite a few flowers in the last couple of weeks.

I'm just happy to get a flower, even if it is just a common garden variety! :D :D :D

But yes, very pleased to know they spot flower out of season, gives me hope for Spring.

Once they have started to flower they usually do so regularly so you have something to look forward to each spring now.
I've already changed over to high K 'flowering' fertiliser for my bonsai wisterias and other flowering species. I usually start this in Feb but I have found it definitely helps promote flowers for next spring.

Note also that Treeman recently made comment that he believes that most Australian wisteria bonsai are underfed by 200%

Thanks Neil, that's definitely what I'm hoping for!

I hit both my mature Wisteria with Sudden Impact for Roses about a month ago, and am hoping that this is the right one to use. it's 9:4:12.

I'm guilty of underfeeding all my plants, will attempt to be a bit more generous! Ta
