Just trimmed this back as I want to remove it from the garden. Should I eat for a certain time of the year to dig it up or anytime okay?

Some suggestions on where to cut back further to five it the best start as bonsai would be much appreciated.

I dug one in September which is my Autumn, it has now wintered and is waking up again as it is Spring here. In retrospect I would of liked to have it had a couple more months recovery time before winter but as far as I can tell it is fine and this last winter was tough going. If you are not likely to get many frosts then I would go for it now but maybe you can wait until next season and dig in late Spring or early Summer.

I'd chop off the top branches and put them into a pot for cuttings, then dig the remainder out and start a whole new shaping program.

I am about 3.5hrs north of Sydney. Is there any advantage letting it bud out before digging?

I like this idea. Three for the price of one! What’s the likely hood of the huge cuttings like that striking???

With a bougainvillea, very likely to strike.

Chances of it striking are good, if you do the right thing by it. Don't water it too much, and keep it in a warm bright spot.
