Collected camellia
I stumbled across the chance to collect this large camellia (love construction sites!). I'm not sure if this is the best time but it was one of those now or never things. It was covered in flower buds - white - but none had opened yet.
Any tips on keeping this one alive? I've got it in a commercial azalea mix at the moment with a bin bag over the pot. It doesn't have a huge amount of roots but there are a few fine ones there. At the bottom was a huge bulbousy thing with no feeder roots so I chainsawed that off so it will one day fit in a pot.
I forgot to take any before shots but here it is after being potted up.

Re: Collected camellia
I can definitly see a really nice tree coming from this, as long as it pulls thru..... My fingers and toes are all crossed in hope that it does! There's probably not much more you can do now, other than wait.
Really nice find

Re: Collected camellia
Are those beer bottles getting smaller, or is that a YUGE stump?
Nice find, I look forward to watching it develop.

I almost forgot to take a photo with the standard measuring device too. I don't think I'll get a cute little shohin out of this one.melbrackstone wrote: ↑July 5th, 2020, 9:45 am Are those beer bottles getting smaller, or is that a YUGE stump?

Re: Collected camellia
Don't know much about Camellia's but it doesn't look like you got much of the root ball. Fingers crossed it pulls through....
If it does, should make a great tree..

Re: Collected camellia
Yes, there were a few thick roots going out the side and two really thick ones going straight down. It was pretty annoying to dig to be honest so it better survive.

Re: Collected camellia
Apparently word of my crazy-person-free-unwanted-plant-removal-service is spreading - a couple of weeks ago I went to a friend of a friend's place to dig out a whole camellia hedge - five plants in all. I wasn't able to get a huge amount of roots on some of these (and forgot to take any before shots) so many fingers and toes crossed for these too. A couple are showing new buds which hopefully isn't just stored energy that will come to nothing.

Re: Collected camellia
Yea I've possibly gotten a little too excited I'll definitely be selling a bunch of stuff off depending on what survives!

Re: Collected camellia
Keep those fingers and toes crossed please, I think we're starting to have an impact on the first stump.
