Thx Beano,
These are side grafted approx. 50mm above the ground.
One has new shoots coming from the base (I've been told by my grandfather that that is bad and will result in the graft being rejected) and the other is as it should be.
Both trees are very leggy, talk and sparsely branched.

Question is, is the tree (first pic I this post) a grafted one? Will I need a grafted tree or is it better to go with an I grafted version?
Starting my journey - and while I welcome challenges, I don't need unnecessary challenges...

Not sure, I have a new one that doesn't appear to be grafted, and an old one which I killed accidentally that also wasn't grafted as far as I can tell. They were both from the same place. I think they graft for a few reasons, one so you have mature stock on regular old root stock, so the tree will fruit but you don't have to wait for years until it's mature enough and also to keep the size of the fruit tree under control, and others say that some trees are grafted as ornamental variants onto regular root stock as the ornamental variety has a weaker root stock that isn't as disease resistant.

The graft did take but I moved this tree on a couple of years ago so hopefully it is in full flower at this time of the year for its new owner?
