I have three pyracanthas, two the same species and one a different one [sorry, haven't a clue the actual names from them tho I think the cascade is an augustifolia]. Despite two being the same they are different as night and day in the way they grow. The mini hit spring running and dropped its winter drear and went bright green and rampaging growth... but not flowering at all. The shohin mate was late waking up and only recently started putting out new leaves and heaps of flowers. The augustifolia is still just starting to exchange winter drear for spring gaiety but wee buds are developing on all but one of its many branches. I'm really chuffed.

The two smaller ones could be benched now but the augustifolia cascade has another full year of development before it will be ready to meet its peers outside of my garden.

Pyras are so much fun. One of my first bonsai was a pyracantha and I enjoyed the flowers and when they died off I neatly clipped them off before realising that they had to stay to make berries. What a bummer but the next year it really packed on the fruit and flowers so maybe I did a good thing for it.

honeysuckle .. the tree in the background, its only small but i see where i want it and it sooo very healthy)

with all my little plants, shrubs and trees.. they may not be bonsai yet . . maybe not even close
. . . . they are happy though! makes me happy!

Since the last photo was taken the cascade has awakened and put on growth, greened up as well as being wired where needed. It is a minimum of a year from being able to be benched at a club meeting but in 15 months it has come a long way. Pyras are so responsive and robust in their development. I think they are great for any stage enthusiast as with good care they respond quickly and you can see your dream of a nice bonsai coming true month by month... if not faster. For novices they provide a wonderful chance to get a 'quick' bonsai while still having time to learn the principles of wiring, pruning and caring -- and how to clip the thorns.

wikid mate thanks!! do you, or anyone, know of any places i can get good quality pyra starters?

i really like your semi cascade! i have a little gardenia that i have been training into cascade* for about 15 months, (my first wholehearted wiring attempt).

i hope it can one day grow in shape to be as graceful, yet strong as yours. i imagine it will be absolutely stunning when it joins the others! looking forward to seeing more pics

another question.... my cascade gardenia is starting to flower, as its still in training, should the flowers be removed?

Hi Mate

I recently bought a Pyra from the green shed.

I have so far taken numerous cuttings and have reserved some for other members.

The plant has the potential to provide LOADS more cuttings. If you want some let me know. Obviously, they will take time to strike and develop some roots but if you want to keep in touch I can send you some in a few months.

Offer open to anyone else that would like some pyra babies.

I can't tell you what colour berries as I havent seen it flower and berry up yet.

i have only taken one cutting from my pyra, it was the top section and is going well. i have thought about trying to strike some of the many young shoots i cut off regularly, but to be honest im not looking for baby babys, more small starters?
but hey... the way they grow, wont take too long
