Ficus coreana on Swamp oak wood

Post by Andreas »

Hi everybody, I have taken all clippings of Ficus coreana that I rooted over a year and placed them on a old Aquarium Swamp oak wood. Starting with building up the wood to hold the trees, wire mesh and a clay-compost-moss composition ratio 3-2-1. I placed the clipping that all had a got an healthy root base into the wood, then cut all leaves followed by applying the clay mixture to cover the wire and attaching the moss patches. The wood will be sprayed for the next two weeks with water every two hours over the day time, in order to keep it moist and building of more air roots. Wiring will take place in about 3 weeks when all roots and moss is firm enough to withstand the wiring process. The idea is going to be a wind swept style.
It is now rain season, this will compliment the process. The spraying of the moss is a must in order to avoid the moss drying out before it has attached itself to the clay and wood.

The total working time from start to finish placing and adding the clay and moss is 15 hours.

Make sure that the clay mixture is very moist, a bit dryer than a cement mix. Spray the moss wet but not to wet otherwise it falls apart. push the moss into the clay so no air bubbles are in-between, moist in-between and after then push the moss on places where it comes of the clay, when you mist the moss with water for 10 min no moss should separate. Keep the clay mixture in a plastic back for a week so you can make repairs if it is raining to hard or pieces falling off. Don't cover the complete area of the surface where the plants are sitting, in order to get enough water onto the roots, this open area is important in the beginning if you haven't got the time to water more the once/twice a day.

Thank you for the comment, here after three days, most of the clay mixture is washed off where it should not be in the first place. I am very surprised that the roots have been setting in quit well, non of the branches feel shaky, the moss sticked as planned and the clay mixture that should come off through spraying is now as i wanted it to be. No heavy rain supported all the progress. As soon as when the leave stamps have falling off naturally I am able to start wiring.

Do to the daily spraying the buts are shooting, so no choice the wiring had to be done, here the result.
The wire is larger, so it does no grow in as fast.

Wow!
Lot of work going on in here!
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

yes, but lots of fun too. can't wait for the new leaves to show, then the style comes to what I expect it to be, 35 hours from start to now. Hope you all have fun watching the progress.

It has been 4 weeks almost to the day, here an update. The new growth is pumping new leaves everywhere, most of the old cut leaves are fallen off and back butting is in full swing. The moss is lush, roots are developing nicely some root tips are going through the moss too. Project works, happy me.

The growing time here is quit fast, new candles will be clipped on the branch tips as the branches reach the desired length.
I don't know If you can see it on the last picture, but there are 6 new tips growing on this branch alone.
