More trunk design help needed

Post by kvan64 »

Hi all,
Since I had great success with the English Oak stump design thanks to all your help here, I would love to give my boug a try as well. I have done a great amount of massive plastic surgeries on this trunk still it doesn't look good yet. Please give your thoughts. A few virtual ideas like last time are excellent too. Thanks heaps in advance

Your tree is saying too much, I love the movement in the branches but think there is too much of it. You have to consider that once the tree has established branches and foliage you will not see much of that swirling and curving that is going on. My suggestion would be to cut the tree back hard, remove that really snaky branch and start to develop a lower tree, taking advantage of the nice trunk. Cutting high on the main branch gives you enough scope to develop a nice sturcture.

Yep, chopped it hard as suggested. Anyone knows where I could buy cut paint? I got the japanese cut paste but it doesn't seem to last. Also it is known that Bougs have rotting problem.
Thanx

this stump looks alot better mate, melaquin gave good advice (has given me great advice too! :D )
as for the rotting you can get wood hardners and apply them to the cut areas and this will help stop that, a wood sealer wouldnt hurt aswell, i will copy a pic of ya tree and show ya what i see in it 8-)
will get back to ya mate!

great stump !!!!!!!!

Put some vaseline on the cut - that will keep the moisture in. If you don't have cut paste then make the cut about 3 cm higher than you want and when it dies back naturally trim off the dead bit. Someone suggested egg white works but then that means I have to make a custard or a cake with the yolk.

Your cut back looks great. You now have the framework to develop an outstanding tree. Great movement.

Ha ha ha. I never knew that to be a bonsai hobbist one has to be a chef as well. I'll pass the eggwhite but will purchase some more cutpaste. As to the hard cut-back, I'm glad that it turns out nice. Now I can appreciate the natural curves/movements that I didn't see before (thanks to all the valuable advice including yours).
Cheers,
DK

And to bro Jamie, you know what- I found quite a lot of new buds sprouting out from where your virt branches are. I hope that the end product will look as nice as you predicted. And if you don't mind doing more virt for free, I'm gonna post more stumps up for advice and suggestion. Starting with my thought-to-be privets stump from other post of mine.
Cheers,
DK
