A Willow Leaf Root Cutting

Post by DavidWilloughby »

Hi all,

I was given this root cutting of a Willow Leaf Fig from a dear friend in 2014, I first styled it in late August 2014. It has since been languishing on the bench, just plodding along and the last few days I thought it about time to have a look at it.

All it needs is to be repotted into a new pot and the change in planting angle will be addressed then. Once that has been done, I will update the thread.

Any thoughts are comments are welcomed.

Cheers

David

Very nice David.

Due to the growth habit of these, it Might pay dividends to cut it back harder now and let the new growth fill in the silohette to the size the canopy is now.

Steven

Hi all,

Thank you Craig, I must admit, compared to some of my tree's, I haven't pushed this at all and I am looking forward to giving this a nudge in the coming seasons to see what can be brought out of it. Appreciate your comment mate.

Thank you Steven, I will admit I was tempted to cut it back harder, and I do think your gentle nudge is what is needed for me to cut it back harder.

I have some thinking to do, thank you Gents, this is what its all about IMHO to gauge thoughts from others and i have food for thought.

Cheers

Hi all,

Thanks Ryceman, appreciate it mate.

Just thought I would update this, it has grown well since being repotted.

A few more years concentrating on ramification and it should be looking better for it.

Hi all,

An update on this one from todays work. I have only repotted it after being given this amazing Japanese pot from a dear friend (which is very fitting that this root cutting was given to me, it now sits it an amazing pot that was also a gift. Thank you Ric for the amazing tree to begin with and Iliya for the amazing pot, you both have no idea on how much they mean to me now. Sentiment is something I hold very dear to me with Bonsai and these epitomize that sentiment)

I wouldn't have normally done another repot, within a year, but it had enough root growth to warrant it. I have left the canopy intact for this reason and the intention is to defoliate it once it has settled with signs of growth, to cut it back and refine it more.

Any thoughts and comments are welcomed.

Cheers

Willow

This is developing nicely David and the new pot suits it well.
I wouldn't be concerned about repotting and trimming these at the same time. I do it regularly without any setback. Plus, they grow from root cuttings which are the ultimate scenario of repot/cutback!

Steven

Great thread and tree as usual DW!
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful
