My new tree - can anyone identify it please?

I bought this tree from B&^$#%*s yesterday and the id tag had faded so I don't what it is. I emailed the nursery that supplied it but they can't pick it either.



It has one seed left pod on it. The pods have a single black seed in them.

It has this gnarly bark. Some training wire was still on it and left these ugly marks. The securing wire was still around the roots too.

Don't you love the condition of their sale items?

I guess I shouldn't have bought it but I fell in love with it. I kept walking away and coming back to it - took at least 90" to make up my mind. If I hadn't bought it yesterday I know I would gone back and got it today.

Hi Ron,
My guess would be murraya if it is it will flower and have sweet perfume. A good choice of plant for your climate. The tree looks a little hungry.

My Guess would be Murraya, but the bark looks too dark
the compound leaf and flower look right, and mine is flowering now so is the right time too

it does look like murraya with the leaves and seed pod, the only thing that puts me off that comclusion is the bark is way to dark for murraya, it should be a light to medium brown, not that dark brown like we can see, unless it has build up of crap in it and is wet, it might need a bit of a clean and if so it will show the true colour of the bark, my clero had the same black crap on the bark and i used a wire brush with my rotary tool on slow speed gently to clean it up, it worked well.

The nursery just emailed me and they're pretty sure now that it's a Murraya paniculata.

I can't wait for next season for season to experience the flowers and perfume.

Do you think it's too early to repot it at the moment? Sure looks like it could do with it.

Hi Ron,
I would guess you would be pretty safe to root prune murraya at this time but one of the tropical experts will advise you on that one in no time. If it were my tree I would put it in a bigger pot for a while and get some bulk in the trunk.

I did mine in November and was fine thru the hot days of summer( I kept it well sheltered).
Should be no trouble doing it now so long as you look after it good if we get any hot days

as long as the night temps are still warm you will be good to repot, i repotted this on last year just in winter, which is quite warm up here but still they will go quite strong, one thing with murraya is they are fast to grow but slow to thicken, if you understand that.


heres mine, which i am gonna be selling soon, the pic is a little old, the tree is really healthy and full of new growth.

quite a large tree, the base is about 1 foot across and the nebari spread is nearly 2 foot, it stands a bit of 2 foot. quite a solid base with nice muscling of the trunk

Ron...yeah I'm still not quite convinced it's an MP .the bark is way too gnarly-they're not called "satinwood" for no reason...mine flowers a lot but only set seed once while Ive had it,in the form of a small fruit ,which looked different to the seed pod in the pic..the foliage looks about right tho..the blossoms have an unmistakeable scent,sorta like orange tree flowers! I could be wrong but the bark is way different to what I've seen...JMO ...Dog

its not su much the roughness, they can get quite gnarly and they can also have that gnarly bark taken of to get the smooth bark with what they are known for as satin wood. mine has very gnarled bark. whats putting my mind out that its not murraya is the colour of the bark it is way to dark, compare mine with rons, see the difference, mine is i light tan colour while rons is a dark brown, nearly blak, i am thinking that might be black sooty residue that will come off to show the actual colour of the bark, but being such a young tree aswell it shouldnt have gnarled bark either unless it is a lot older than what it looks

I've been studying the label with a magnifying glass and with a stretch (and the help of Google) and I think I can make out what might the second of two words - Eukaryota. However, that does not appear to be a species name but something to do with the structure of plant cells.

i would keep it if it wasnt so massive and hard to move, its just to big for me, so right now it is a patio tree sort of thing mixed with a bit of bonsai in mind
if any one is interested in it let me know, willing to sell or swap for good stock (i will get fresh pics soon, if there is any interest)

Yes, I think that's a dead-end, Jamie, but it was worth a try. I gave it a feed last night which probably ended up being washed through by the torrential rain we're having.
