Zelkova?

Post by Daluke »

Hello. I bought this yesterday for $16. The girl at the nursery said this was a Chinese elm. I'm certain it's a Zelkova. Can any of the gurus out there give their opinion?

Hi Daluke , it doesn't look like my Zelkova - Grey Bark Elm , I would consider a Carpinus - Hornbeam . Do a google and you may find American or European will match .

Cheers . Alpineart

I was thinking Hornbeam too.

A better look at some unopened bud tips will help us identify.

Zelkova leaves are usually thinner and more pointy at the tip.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Here are some more images.

You'd have to excuse my ignorance with the area of horticulture!

The colour of the leaves are much lighter than Elms. It also has some hairy looking dried flowers hanging from some parts.
