Please help with an ID

Post by peterb »

Hi everyone , I dug this tree the other day , I know it's not the ideal time but it was destined for the tip so I laid claim to it . An Id would be greatly appreciated , thanks . The other question I have is , should I leave the suckers on to keep it growing or are they likely to take all the energy away from the trunk and thereby the trunk die.It has a very good compact rootball as it was growing in a garden and I managed to get alot of roots .

I'm not really familiar with guava but it certainly looks a lot like Crepe myrtle to me. Leaves, bark and suckers are right for Crepe myrtle. Crepe myrtle flowers in autumn so if it has just been dug it should have had buds, flowers or seeds developing. That would be the best clue to ID.

It's got beautiful bark like a crepe myrtle, but the leaves are the wrong shape. I'm pushing for guava. I'm not sure about how best to deal with the suckers....maybe let it grow out for a year and see if the trunk buds?

hello,

that looks like guava. they're natives here. They grow very vigorously. Any update on the guava?
