Juniper?
Any thoughts? Its about 1.6m tall and 3m im diameter. Seems to have a trunk around 20cm in diameter.
Will have a better look tomorrow. A 20t excavator should make work of removing it....

Re: Juniper?
Hi fishnfreak , mate if you have the time cut it back by 50-70 % leaving plenty of green foliage on the branches . Check out whats hidden under all that foliage then consider removing it . You will need a large container minimum 750mm plus or a decent grow bed area to transplant it into and plenty of help to man handle it .
The foliage might not be ideal but you can always change that by approach grafting a more suitable foliage onto it .
Australia is a big place too , you might want to consider a more accurate location if seeking help and advice for your climate and area especially when collecting material like this ??? .
Cheers Alpineart

Re: Juniper?
Thanks Alpineart, ive just worked through the 17pages of your juniper collection thread.
Im in SA, we are currently looking at the next week being in mid 20s up to 31. I am going to build my own growbox to suit the root ball when it comes out.
I just need to source the potting medium.
I usually use Akadama, but noticed you use a Scoria/pine bark mix. Where do you get the scoria from and what size is it?

Re: Juniper?
Hi Mate , the scoria is soft red 8mm screenings from Beveridge Quarries in outer Melbourne . Plenty of scoria available but it must be soft scoria not hard marble . The size is 8mm screenings not 8mm minus which is full of mud and 25 %stone , the pine bark is aged and collected from the plantations here in Myrtleford .
Rip down to the job sight this morning and offer a slab for the juni' it work with most labor forces I have collected from . I have even had the tree's loaded in the bargain . Tell the boss you have an urgent life saving task to do
If you change your location in your profile people can instantly access the info and give better advice .
Cheers . Alpine

Re: Juniper?
The job is no worries, i am the foreman so i can get it whwn i want as long as it doesnt delay the job.
How do you know if it is soft scoria? None of the local sites have it differentiated.
May have to use akadama/pine bark

Re: Juniper?
Too big in fact. Long straight trunk, goes from 200mm to 150mm in 1.5m
Good news, there is another one, smaller, more foliage closer to the trunk. I think ill check that one out.

Re: Juniper?
If they are up for grabs, dig them both. Decide if they are worth while after they have survived.
Big junipers are hard to find, movement or not.

Re: Juniper?
The greenstead leaves are quite waxy. You can almost rub it off on your hands. It tends to make really thick trunks in relation to the top compared to junipers. The leaves are thicker too. That's about all I can tell you.fishnfreak wrote:No cones Treeman. Is that the only way to tell?

Re: Juniper?
Don't like transplanting, don't like wiring, very straight and coarse growth, VERY prone to Cypress Canker and die-back.fishnfreak wrote:Also why is that mate?treeman wrote:Looks like Cupressus macrocarpa ''Greenstaed maginficent'' Look for cones. If it is, walk away!
