[ID] conifer gifted from the big green shed

Post by Raymond B »

Hi all, I got this little tree for my birthday back in January and I would love to make it into something a little more interesting than what it is right now. To start out, could I get some help with the ID? I will then make another thread on its progression.
I'm happy to provide more photos too!

It's a juniper chinensis aka Shimpaku Juniper I would say. The scale foliage is a giveaway.

Agree with Ryceman.
Shimpaku are quite slow growing so don't expect this to take off or develop into a massive trunk any time soon.
If you search for images of shimpaku bonsai you will notice that a lot of them feature dead wood and fantastic twisted and curled trunks and branches because that's how they look in the high mountains where they naturally grow.
