ID help needed

Post by mountain troll »

Hi all, any help on identifying this tree would be greatly appreciated.
It gets very small white flowers with five petals and red fruit
Evergreen, but does loose some leaves due to frost and the leaves
also turn red with any frost burn. Thanks.

I think it is probably Cotoneaster microphyllus - small leaf cotoneaster. They seem to set fruit a bit more prolifically than the more common C. horizontalis. Branching is very stiff with little taper so wiring and pruning is needed to produce good bonsai but it can make really great small bonsai.

It doesn't produce much fruit at all and is more frost sensitive than most cotoneaster. I agree I need to get more
Movement happening and clamp it to get a bend to the main branch to the right.
