Post by pureheart »

Hi All,

Near where I live there are many trees and seedlings of the tree in the photo...What is it? and is it good material for Bonsai?

Thanks!

Hi Pureheart,
Looks a lot like English Elm to me, which if it is... would make a great candidate for bonsai. Lots of good examples can be found here on this site.

Yes EE and most likely suckers as opposed to seedlings.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Almost certainly sucker in my experience but they can be transplanted. You will find they are growing from a much thicker horizontal root. They may or may not have some small roots coming from the stem of the suckers. Even without any of their own roots you can still cut the stem close to the parent root and treat as cuttings. Upward of 90% success when dug in winter. I have not tried in summer.

Those tiny little ones are probably hardly worth the effort though. Look for some with thicker trunks.
