Hey folks,

Was wondering if this is a variety of privet? There are many of them scattered around a small part of a reserve that is full of iron bark trees.

Yep, it looks like privet to me. Ligustrum sinence. They make great trees in pots.

Trunks look right for privet but that's a dodgy picture of leaves! Privets are flowering down here right now - bunches of foul smelling white flowers followed by black berries.
Very easy to dig and collect and few people will object to you taking weeds however not all collected trees make great bonsai. The one in your picture has very straight trunks with no taper. Would probably take many years to achieve a good bonsai with character, taper and ramification. My philosophy when collecting possible bonsai - look at lots but take just a few of the best.

I am sure there are better trees neighbouring the one I took. Is the best time winter to dig privets out?

I dig them anytime of year, it’s the after care that’s important

I have dug privets in winter but they have been very slow to start growing again (several years to get really growing). They are very resilient (weedy) so maybe summer transplant while they are growing would be OK and maybe even better than winter?

Interesting observations guys....
Would you say the same could be said and done for trident maples or jacaranda?
