Hi guys I got some cones and branches from this tree which I'm guessing is a cedar or pine. Do they strike from cuttings and are the seeds the actual rings on the cone, it's like a waffle.
Any germination tips will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Tony

Are they cones or dinosaur eggs? They are beasts!

The seeds will be inside the layers of of the cone.Put it in a brown paper bag in warmish place (windowsill maybe) and they will fall out naturally.

Thanks Sue, can I get the cones while they are green and put them in a paper bag to dry out or do they need to dry up more on tree.

They are pretty big, but they also look pretty aerodynamic. Might be able to use them as ammo for a potato gun. People with possum problems might find this as a Naturale way of getting rid of them.Pearcy001 wrote:Are they cones or dinosaur eggs? They are beasts!

If anyone asks why are all these dead possums about, cones have fallen off tree and killed possum.

Re: Tree ID and germination tip pls
That's a cedar Tony - Cedrus species. I'd guess Cedrus deodar because of the longer needles but there are a couple of other species that look very similar.
Pick ripe cones - wait for them to turn brown and start to break up then you know they will be fully ripe.
As the cones dry out they will fall apart (sometimes you need to help them a bit) You'll end up with lots of cone scales and some smaller seeds. Pick out the seeds and get rid of the rest.
Sometimes a few will germinate if you just sow them in pots but you should get much better germination after stratification - usual method is to mix the seed with damp sand/peat/sphagnum/perlite/etc in a plastic bag and keep it in the fridge for a few weeks then plant into good potting mix. The seeds may even start to grow in the fridge.
