Always be taken away during repotting anyway so it doesn’t matter what you cut through when doing this. Cutting through concrete footballs is really hard work, many blisters, but ya just part of the job.

Yes but cutting a root bound tree which has been root pruned before is not the same as cutting the roots of one which hasn't!

Brewster, Would you consider layering some of the upper parts off instead - or as well? They are much more likely to succeed and you need not disturb the tree at all that way. Not to mention they are more interesting than the lower part.
Quality over size always!

Update...
It's still hanging in there..
Some brown tips on the very end ..
Which i believe is normal for this species in winter..

Waiting for the southern spring to kick in ..
To see it start to get that green flush..
