ID seedling came from nowhere

Post by philgobbe »

This just popped up next to mountain ash (eucalyptus regnans) seedlings I planted. It came up a season after though and I jave no idea what it is. Bark of the trunk looks like better then a weed. I just realised rhe photo waa blurry will take another phot unless some has any ideas.Image

A bit hard to tell from just one (blurry) leaf, but my bauhinia has bi-lobed leaves like that. :lost:

Try to get a clearer shot of the leaf and the stem (need to check whether it has alternate or opposite buds). Then have a look around to see what larger trees are in the area. Seed must have come from somewhere.
My immediate guess is cercis (judas tree) but Chinese tallow is another with similar leaves that can pop up sometimes.

Nobody could be certain from that photo, I wouldn’t think, sorry. Agree with Raging Bull. Looks like a Bauhinia to me. Common native up my way, but also hoticultaral varieties planted as street and park trees. Perhaps a street tree in your neighbourhood? Semi-wind-blown seeds I believe. Hope that helps. Would need better photo (and ideally more material) to be confident

Much better photos, Thanks.
I'm still going with Cercis. Bauhinia is closely related and leaves look very similar but, while they can be a weed up north, they don't even grow very well down this far so are almost unknown. While all things are possible, I'd be surprised if this was Bauhinia self seeding in Melbourne.
There are several species of Cercis. One called Judas tree, more recently 'Forest pansy' has become popular. Both have flowers all along the trunk and branches in spring followed by black seed pods hanging from the branches for most of the winter. If there's one nearby it should be really obvious from the seed pods hanging all over the main branches.
