Possible baby Ficus
[ID]
Hi,
Sorry I can’t edit the title to include the ID prefix :/
I found this baby in my garden and have since potted it. I thought it may be some type of Ficus as there’s some big ones nearby but looks a bit different to the local ones. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Kbonsai

Break off a leaf. If it exudes white sap there’s a good chance it’s a fig. Also all figs have stipules, which protect a young lead and fall off as they expand. I can’t see the new buds well enough to see if they have stipules or not. If it is a fig, it’s the first I’ve seen with chlorosis.

Re: Possible baby Ficus
I just cut one off and broke it up into my hand to try to smell it haha I wouldn’t say that it smells like anything notable really. Just kind of like broken green leaves if that makes any sense, no spiciness or anything
Thanks,

Re: Possible baby Ficus
If it was over this side I would say the swollen root and leaves look very much like Brachychiton. There's a number of species but I'm not sure whether you have any endemics over there. Some could be planted as street or garden trees.

Very interesting Shibui, the stem looks similar and appears we get the Brachychiton diversifolius over here but usually up north.shibui wrote:If it was over this side I would say the swollen root and leaves look very much like Brachychiton. Also says there are stipules present (early deciduous) but only on young leaves, the leaf shape also looks similar but I can never find images of a young root system of any of these plants

Re: Possible baby Ficus
Agree with shibui based on that last pic. Be aware they can have very variable leaves

Re: Possible baby Ficus
located a large Brachychiton tree nearby, 99 percent sure this is its parent. Just not sure on the particular species
