Species ID please
I've got this plant out of the hollow of a jacaranda tree. No idea of the species or how it will do as a bonsia. Was wondering once it's got over it's transplant shock how it will go with a big chop down?

Re: Species ID please
Hi Pitcha,
It looks like a Shefflera actinophylla to me, although slightly shorter and rounder leaves this one it seems...
I have a couple and they are pretty tough, no worries with hard trunk chop..

Re: Species ID please
Hi Pitcha,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.
Leaf size reduces quite a lot, but stays still very big for a "traditional" bonsai. The heart wood is very soft too... Keep that in mind when doing big chops.
I have repotted mine (and defoliated, which doesn't take too long with these! ) a month ago. Not the best time of the year, but it just means it is slower to bounce back (new leaves just appearing now).
For a trunk chop, I would wait till warmer days, so it bounces back more quickly (that soft wood...).
Hope that helps...
Pierre
