[SOLVED] Conifer please

Hi everyone,

My uncle gave me a seedling a few years ago but doesn't remember where he collected the seeds. Its about 20cm tall now and i was hoping to turn it into a bonsai. Could it be some sort of cypress or false cypress - any ideas?

(sorry in advance if the pictures are too dark/bright, my computer is playing up and I cant tell how the colours will turn out)

Is this sort of plant suitable for bonsai? and if it is how do you train the flat sprays of leaves?

Look like a Thuja Occidentalis to me

webo's probably right iwith this one.

it may be a little difficult to develop as a bonsai due to it's growth habit. the foilage always grows vertical like pages in a book.

It looks like Thuja occidentalis to me as well and they make fine bonsai. It is a native of the Eastern US and Canada and is used as bonsai material quite a bit. Here is an example image from the ABS reference image library. And oh by the way, we would love to add some of the Australian natives to our image libary as well if anyone would be intrested in making a contribution.

The tree in the example image looks great - I'll be patient and wait till my tree grows a bit more before attempting anything.

That trees always growin in my neighbourhood, honestly they're a bit annoying (that's because you see them EVERYWHERE). They do grow quite fast i think, and they also grow little tiny fruit which is normally green and has little tiny spikes on the outside of the fruit.
