Salix..Weeping Willow Shohin

This is a little project i am working on and i could not enter it as it had been trunk wired to achieve the curves.It is exactly 250mm tall and the foliage has reduced astoundingly. As all willows it lives in a bucket of water but, because of constant tip pruning, it is not going bananas with growth. Comments are always welcome.

Can you show me a picture of the cheap Bunnings plastic pot bar code chop please? I may be interested if the sticker has not been eaten by snails yet.

I know how much work goes into your other willow, I am surprised to see you tackle another but I like where you are going with it.
It will be interesting to see how you manage over a longer period of time with foliage reduction.

looking good mate. How long in training? Would love to see pics on how it started. I have about 15 willows atm (weeping and tortured), just gna let them go crazyfor the next season or 2 (chop back in winter) to thicken trunks. Really do love willows, do take a bit more work but they really can make stunning bonsai. I have 2 in shallow trays, the rest are just in pots and watered daily

Hi Bodhi, I have an aversion to weeping trees (not entirely sure why), but I don't mind this little guy. Maybe 'cause it's good to see a weed out of the landscape and confined to a pot

Hi Bodhi , Nice little willow ,very demanding like a shohin human .Where do you find the time to play with this one , i know the constant work involved with a big willow .Good luck with it .

Sorry Mick, Bunnings chops do not wear well. I personally think the pot speaks for itself.

Thanks deepeetee, it started life as a small tertiary branch that a friend gave to me. It came from a Memorial to fallen soldiers in Daylesford.

I haven't tackled a willow, but was considering taking some cuttings and having a go.

Out of curiosity, what is it about willows that gives them the bad reputation in the above comments? I hear they strike super easily, so that can't be it- why are they so time consuming?

They need heaps of water, if they dry out, even for a short period of time they can have dieback and lose branches. Also very very fast growing and very hungry. I dont really think they are overly demanding or difficult if looked after properly

They are very labour intensive, water and food hungry and difficult to turn into anything. I have only ever seen one that made me go.. wow, i am gonna have a go. Its in Bonsai focus and i do not know the owner
