making something of an unwanted juniper

this juniper i put up for sale on this site a few months back however it didnt sell so looking at it today i decided to do some work reducig it back to small shohin size.

obviously the jins need some carving and si dioa work but i am happy with the result so far and will allow the tree to rest now and see if it survives it new sap flow redirection

Hi Jarryd,

I like what you have done, my only fear is that you have done too much all at once. Junipers have a habit of "carking it" when you take too much off all at once. The shari that you have created, was it done all in one go too? Trees need time to divert their sap flows. Hope your tree comes out the other side all okay, if it does, it should make a great little shohin.

i didnt care much for this tree at all. the styling was done all in one sitting due to boredom. i dont really care particularly if it dies however i have done such as this to another juniper a yr ago and it survived fine, haha so far anyways. so we will see if it survives if not there is no loss really i wanted to rid myself of this tree anyways so making something out of nothing or nothing out of nothing lol. we will see hey.

ps i will be posting another thread tonight about one of the privets i had for sale aswell. i have styled it again as small shohin. and defoliated it close to winter aswell which is obviously not adviseable however its a privet and i live in a far warmer climate then most so shud be fine. haha i stopped work on most of my trees a month ago and im already itching to get back into it hurry up spring . i spent an arm and a leg on a big juniper at red dragon bonsai on the goldy a few months back and cant wait to get into it come spring. it has apparently been grown by leong from down south (excuse spelling if its wrong) for twelve years and was my fav of a bunch that were sent up.

jarryd, it's always nice to see a tree cut down to be in better proportions with it's trunk caliper. About 10yrs ago I was advised by a very wise friend to do the very same thing with about 30 of my early ugly trees, and it was the best single thing I've ever done. It spawned a love and appreciation of shohin bonsai that will never leave me.

You will have a hard time with Si Diao work with dead wood. Fibres are better pulled when the wood is still green.

the wood hasnt been stripped of bark for long it takes a while for it to dry out, so it can still be done. and si diao can be carried out on older wood its just harder due to the fact that green wood holds longer fibres when striped. so you are right obviously it is better to do on green wood

just an update on this little tree

i did some work on it yesterday as it had survived its first styling and sap flow redirection and was pushing new growth strongly.

just sorted out the branching and did some carving on the deadwood. its starting to look quite nice now a definate keeper now.
