A quick question for astro or any other prunus experts, is it ok to pinch out the tips of vigorous growth before it has hardened off to encourage the less vigorous growth? I have prunus mume that has very strong new shoots low down on the trunk which are overtaking the growth higher up, I would like to encourage the growth higher up if possible?

If you pinch the growth too often you will force the production of leaf buds of flowering buds.

All my mum tend to have a few strong branches that shoot up and can grow to two feet long in the season. These i normally tame but cutting right back before they get so big. this spreads the energy out to the weaker branches. I also cut the tips off all my branches at the start to mid autumn.

question? is your mume grafted? are the string shoots from beneath the graft of this is the case?

definately, stronger shoots need to be controlled as theyw ill lead the the die back of the weaker shoots.

Thanks Astro. No the tree is not grafted. It was styled late winter, reduced in size and a few existing branches wired. The strong shoots are from the base of the existing lower branches, which is fine as I think I may replace some of the lower branches with the new shoots but the growth on the upper branches has not been that vigorous. I do not want the lower growth to overtake and steal too much energy from the upper part of the tree.

ah ok. i get what you mean. Helathy mume branches will normally proude buds at the base of last years shoots. Be careful though. unless you want to chance losing last years branch i would remove it. other wise use them to replace the old branch. cos the new one will sap the energy from last years branch

I would cut the strong growth back (or if you want to keep the branch, pinch tip it and defoliate it) so the tree puts its energy into the weaker crown

Hi Steve,

Just thought I'd check in on this one and see how it's going?

Cheers,
Pearcy.
