Shohin JPB Progression 2

Hi guys I have another black pine id like to catalog up her. This tree was rather difficult to style as it had all the branches coming out on a 45* angle, so everything had to be brought round from the back, and disguised to not look like that. Its trunk was certainly the reason why this tree caught my eye at the nursery.

interesting trunk but annoying branches

my solution was to find a balance on the angle and the branches, where is what I had come up with

now onto the styling

Here is the result of the styling, as you can see there was a little bit of wizardry and trickery to get those branches to fall into place.

finally I had repot this tree into a Bigei pot on the correct angle. I feel like after the repot the tree has come into its own. While this tree is larger than shohin ill try and get it down under that 20cm mark in the future.

I look forward to sharing updates of this tree in the future.

Very clever and very interesting Bunce. Well done and the re-styling thus far! What a lovely pot too.

Regarding the future - what next for the design? Will you need more trickery to move something more towards the front? Or perhaps some kind of shari to create a satire as to why the there may be few branches on part of the trunk.

Please take these thoughts as my musings only - not as criticism; I don’t have the skills to be critical of the good work thus far - more trying to understand the next steps.

Your musings are rather well thought out :hooray: ...

Id say that once this tree has gone through a season or two of decandling and bud selection, ill reconsider the first branch, and pull both the other two branches towards the front more.

If the first branch does come off, a jin and subsequent shari will be made, albeit small and appropriately sized.

final thought:
As the tree fills out it'll become less apparent where the branches come from, but more apparent where they rest.

pine as of winter 2020 :tu:

after a spectacular second flush last summer, I was able to design a tighter and more refined tree. I was quite happy with the result however this tree if far from 'finished'. Ill be continuing the growths of the tree, however it is for sale: https://hakujuenbonsai.com/products/Japanese ... nsai-jbp-2 :palm:

Hope you all enjoy :hooray:
