[GavinG] Berberis "Little Favourite"

Post by GavinG »

OK, I'm in.

Berberis "Little Favourite"
Present height around 37cms, probable eventual height around 7cms.
Cost: $13.50 from John Mackenzie's Mt Murray nursery in Moss Vale.
P1050129.jpg
I'll probably only be using the bending bit at the base.
P1050131.jpg
It will take at least two re-pots to get the root ball down to bonsai pot size.

I'm sure its been said before that smaller will be allowed. 250mm and down, no lower limit I think.

OK, so Sept 1 rolled around, and chopping ensued:
P1050151.jpg
I thought that this was the framework for the tree:
P1050152.jpg
By November 1 I've lost the damn tree. It's in there somewhere.

It's growing well, I'll choose branches soon, and cut hard again.

Thanks Craig.

The trunk texture looks OK if you look reeeeely reeeeely close, but it's going to have to be a tiny tree in a very tiny pot to show it off, I think. Might be too much to ask to get the root-ball that small after just one more repot in spring. I won't hurry it.

It's amazing what you find to do, to put off doing paperwork... I blame Craig.

This is more or less where it's heading. I'm not sure what's going to happen in the gap on the right, possibly something from behind will be brought around. 9.5cms high.

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

I've let this grow out, as it was completely defoliated by snails. They've never looked at it before, or since. The basic tree is still there under the foliage, and the next step will be repotting and cutting back in spring.
