Re: [Ces] Buxus harlandii
YAY 1st of April!!! Got stuck right in with this one.
Cleaned the trunk and surrounding roots, performed the trunk chop and wired up the only two branches that were ready for it (leader and 1st left branch). Got some surface root issues I'll have to work on at the first repot but I look forward to the progress on this mini.
Getting used to my new camera, so the focus is off in some spots. sorry. The new rig should allow me to take some great photos of my trees in the future though.
Cheers,
Ces.

Re: [Ces] Buxus harlandii
That is some very nice material.I like what you are doing. Why did you not leave the lowest larger branch as an escape branch to thicken the trunk? Any particular reason?
I ask lots of questions that sound like suggestions. Please remember I am a inquisitive newbie trying to figure out why You made a particular decision, in order to learn.

Hi Neli,
For the finished height that i'm planning for this tree, i think the trunk is probably big enough.
I'm looking to end up with a mini, japanese style, sumo, informal upright. If that helps.
Thanks for your interest.
Cheers,
Ces.

Re: [Ces] Buxus harlandii
Makes sense. I can not figure out from the picture how big is the trunk, and had to ask. How big it is?

Re: [Ces] Buxus harlandii
Hi Ces, I love this species and yours is off to a good start so it will be fun to watch it develop over the comp...good luck.
Would you consider tilting it to the right a few degrees to enhance the movement? If so, you may need to slightly adjust the leader to compensate.
Cheers, Dario.

Re: [Ces] Buxus harlandii
Yeah sorry Neli, I realise now that there is no scale in the picture. Its raining here right now so I am going to guess that to the top of the leader its about 70 mm at the moment. Should make for a nice stout tree.Neli wrote:Makes sense. I can not figure out from the picture how big is the trunk, and had to ask. How big it is?
Thanks Dario. Its the only one I have. Got about a dozen collected English Box and I was planning on treating it the same. Do you think this is right?Dario wrote:Hi Ces, I love this species and yours is off to a good start so it will be fun to watch it develop over the comp...good luck.

I'd like to address your second comment but I'm not sure where that sits within the rules... you'll just have to wait and see what i have planned
Cheers guys,
Ces.

Re: [Ces] Buxus harlandii
Hi Ces, hope I haven't breached the rules or affected your entry...I thought suggestions were allowed this time around?...I will re-read the rules.
I treat this species the same as Eng box and get decent results, but I only have a couple of each species so not a tremendous amount of experience with them.
Cheers, Dario.
PS Plese ignore my previous post, it is such a minor alteration to your entry and it wouldn't impact the outcome of your tree and its development. Good luck and keep the updates coming

Re: [Ces] Buxus harlandii
In the Fine print section of the rules in the first post of the competition thread it says
'• Discussion, advice and comments in the entry threads is encouraged, but please "No Virtuals".'
So it should be fine,
Cheers

Re: [Ces] Buxus harlandii
sorry guys. Just went over the rules again.
No worries Dario... I didn't think you had and I appreciate the advice. Just didn't want to put MYSELF in it by getting too much out of you
good luck with it guys.
Cheers,
Ces.

Re: [Ces] Buxus harlandii
I updated early on this one so here's another for good measure.
Wired a few more branches in to place. Three more to set (when they grow big enough) and then I should have the primary and secondary structure growing in the direction that I want.
They photo shows the back with the old and new trunk chop visible. Cheers,
Ces.

Just like any other plant. Cut and nip to get branches forking.

Re: [Ces] Buxus harlandii
it is a slow process, but like other trees cut back to the first or second leave pair ans it will shoot back and ramify
